The homely restaurant Peipsi kalapunkt is located on the magical shore of Lake Peipus, in the smallest town in Estonia with a rich history, with the highest cliff and exposed sandstone on the shore on one side and one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the other side. The town has its own old town and a street typical of Old Believers with houses standing close to each other. In one of these houses, which stood on this site 200 years ago, is located the homely restaurant.

Traditional recipes of the Peipus coast

In family traditions, two cultures have closely intertwined — Estonian and Old Believer-Russian. It is no wonder that such families on the coast were called “poluvertsy”, hence the rich traditional culinary tradition, with a predominance of fish dishes (smoked fish according to old recipes on alder wood, nettles, and with the addition of sugar), as was customary in families living on the Peipus coast of Estonia, as well as elements of traditional Russian-Old Believer cuisine. Of course, the main dish of festive tables in Old Believer families was pies.

Since the family was large and worked hard, they traditionally baked big pies from live dough with a special secret. Fish, besides smoking, was prepared in all sorts of variations, as it was always fresh; the use of spices was minimal, as they would only spoil the taste of Peipus fish, mainly it was fried or baked fish with seasonal vegetables. The restaurant’s motto is that the tastiest food is simply prepared from fresh ingredients in front of the customer. No one should leave hungry, is one of the main traditions, and every customer is a guest of the family.
